Georgia labor officials say metro Atlanta has set a record for total jobs, reaching 2.76 million for the first time.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler on Thursday announced the record-setting number for August.

Butler said the August unemployment rate was 4.6 percent, down from 4.8 percent in July.

Officials said the strongest job growth was seen in government, particularly in public schools; professional and business services; and education and health services.

Georgia Tech says one of the three people arrested during a protest following a vigil for a student killed by campus police is a student at the university and the other two are not.

An officer fatally shot 21-year-old Scout Schultz late Saturday. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has said Schultz called 911 to report an armed suspicious person.

The school identified those arrested Monday night as Vincent Castillenti, Jacob Wilson and Cassandra Monden. Fulton County jail records identify the third person arrested as Andrew Xavier Monden.

A Georgia middle school music teacher who assigned homework featuring explicit rap lyrics has been suspended.

Crishana Wright, the parent of a student at Bethune Middle School in DeKalb County, told WSB-TV on Tuesday that her daughter brought home a worksheet that contained expletives, violence and sexually suggestive lyrics.

The officer who fatally shot a Georgia Tech student had been with the campus police department for about 16 months, according to state records.

Officer Tyler Beck shot and killed Scout Schultz, 21, Saturday night after the fourth-year student called 911 to report an armed and possibly intoxicated suspicious person, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

Beck is on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Georgia Tech said on its website.
