Atlanta has a lot of events happening this weekend, so Atlanta PlanIt has pulled together some of their favorites for those looking to explore the city.
You can start at a festival where restaurants are competing for the title of “Best Grilled Cheese,” celebrate the beginning of October with a spooky Halloween play, or don your best Victorian costume at a beloved Atlanta cemetery. These are all things to do in Atlanta this weekend, Sept. 30 to Oct. 2.
Friday, Sept. 30
The Cheese Fest
Atlanta’s night of cheese and artisan food from around the world returns Friday at a new location. The Cheese Fest (formerly known as Atlanta Cheese Festival) is moving from its home at the Atlanta Botanical Garden to the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot near Underground Atlanta. The new name is a result of the festival expanding to two new cities this year, Cincinnati and Houston, but it will still have its signature event – the grilled cheese competition known as The Meltdown.
Every attendee gets one voting token for the competition, and the winning restaurant will be named at the end of the night. There’s also live music from Packway Handle Band, artisanal cheese for sale, and a portion of the event proceeds benefit The Giving Kitchen, which provides assistance to individuals who work in the local restaurant industry.
Saturday, Oct. 1
"The Sleepy Hollow Experience"
If you’re looking for some spooky things to do in Atlanta this weekend, try “The Sleepy Hollow Experience” at Serenbe. It’s been named one of the top five Halloween plays in the country by American Theatre Magazine, and this is the show’s opening weekend for 2016.
Serenbe Playhouse’s version of the "Sleepy Hollow" story is different than your typical theater show. It takes place entirely outside with no seating as you roam through a meadow in Serenbe. So if you attend, be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes for grass. The show has had three sold-out seasons in the past, but tickets are still available.
Candler Park Fall Fest
Atlanta’s Candler Park neighborhood hosts a family-friendly fall festival this weekend. Candler Park Fall Fest is two full days of music with more than 200 artists and vendors, a Tour of Homes, 5K and Fun Run, and much more.
On Saturday the day starts with the 5K at 9 a.m. in which participants will receive a free T-shirt and drink voucher. Then starting at noon, you can explore the artisan market that’s co-sponsored by Indie Craft Experience, listen to cover bands of favorites like The Beatles, Nirvana and Fleetwood Mac, or bring the kids to the special Kidlandia activity area.
Sunday, Oct. 2
Sunday In The Park
Perhaps one of the most unusual events happening this weekend is the 37th annual Sunday in the Park festival at Historic Oakland Cemetery.
It’s an afternoon of costume contests, living history demonstrations, live music and storytelling. Musicians will be performing throughout the cemetery grounds, and there will also be an artisan market and plant sale. All ages can enter the popular Victorian costume contest, which begins at 2:15 p.m. So if you’re looking to compete, start putting together your “Most Original,” Best Steampunk” or even “Best Gothic” costume. You can check out all the award categories online.
