Georgia's largest health insurance company, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia, has started a new rule:  it will deny coverage to individual policyholders for emergency room visits the company deems to be unnecessary.

The idea is to address the soaring costs that are racked up when patients go to the ER for problems that should be handled in a doctor's office or a clinic.

Emory Plans Healthcare Expansion At Interstate-85

Two of Atlanta’s biggest hospital systems are set to create the city’s next healthcare hub at Interstate 85 and North Druid Hills Road.

According to this week’s Atlanta Business Chronicle, Emory University would develop a mixed-use campus on 70 acres at the south side of North Druid Hills in Executive Park with 2.3 million square feet of new development.

Grady Hospital dedicated the Marcus Trauma and Emergency Center on Oct. 5 in recognition of philanthropy of Billi and Bernie Marcus, a co-founder of the Home Depot.

In all, the Marcus couple have given a total of $50 million to Grady, which also went to the establishment of the Marcus Stroke and Neuroscience Center.

The biggest disappointment in Bernie Marcus’ life was when he was accepted to Harvard’s medical school, because his family could not afford the $10,000 tuition.

The Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Atlanta is expanding its location near Emory and also at clinics around the metro area. It's faced criticism in the past for long wait times for services. Officials say the expansion should streamline patient care.

The VA Hospital is adding a new wing for urgent care and another one, where primary care and mental health services will be alongside each other.
