Economic Growth Helps Metro Atlanta's Population Boom

Metro Atlanta's population is still growing. New Atlanta Regional Commission numbers show the population increased in all 10 core metro counties from April 2016 to April 2017.

"We added about 78,000 new residents last year, which is the strongest single-year growth we've had in about a decade,” said Mike Carnathan, manager of the ARC’s research and analytics group. 

He’s not surprised at what is driving the population boom.

The group, Americans for the Arts, just released its fifth Arts & Economic Prosperity study, or AEP5. 

It looks at the financial impact of arts and culture groups across the U.S., and it has specific numbers for metro Atlanta.

WABE's Amy Kiley stopped by the Atlanta Regional Commission to learn more.

From the political and social legacy of the local civil rights movement, to the institutional history of the Atlanta's historically black colleges and universities, to the innovations of the city's music and art scenes, Atlanta has become known over the decades as an unofficial "capital of black America."
