Metro Atlantans have debated for decades whether to expand commuter rail lines into the suburbs, with many residents outside the city rejecting plans for expansion.

But another form of public transportation -- bus rapid transit -- has quietly captured the imagination of many public officials.

MARTA’s trying to figure out how to spend a new half-penny sales tax in the city of Atlanta, and it wants the public's help.

The transit agency came up with a list of expansion projects, including bus rapid transit and streetcar expansion, before voters approved the tax last fall.

But the list included more than the $2.5 billion expected from the tax could fund.

So now MARTA's asking Atlantans which projects they want to happen first. And at a community meeting Thursday, people gave wide-ranging answers.

A bill to be filed in the Georgia legislature could direct billions in tax dollars to MARTA for an unprecedented expansion, according to sponsor Sen. Brandon Beach, R-Alpharetta.

Cobb County is looking to add a new express route from Kennesaw to Midtown Atlanta.

On Tuesday night, transportation officials updated Cobb County Board of Commissioners about Cobb County Transit Bus Route 10X, which would reduce a two-hour trip to 90 minutes.

Eric Meyer, Cobb County Department of Transportation’s planning division manager, said an express bus route would relieve overcrowding and let riders track the new buses.
