Labor Day in Atlanta means a lot of things to a lot of people. For about 80,000 of those people, it means Dragon Con.

Today on "StoryCorps Atlanta," we’ll hear from Jennifer Young and Rebecca Hill, who are each other’s self-proclaimed “geeks in crime”. They met at Kennesaw State but didn’t realize that they had the same gaming hobbies until they ran into each other one year at Dragon Con.

This story was recorded in partnership with the Atlanta History Center, which hosts Atlanta's StoryCorps Booth.

StoryCorps Atlanta: Sharing A Love Of Science Fiction

Growing up, June Nutter used the worlds that science fiction and fantasy books created to escape from the stressful world of growing up in the civil rights era. She passed on that love of science fiction to her son Gerald Coleman – even going so far as playing "Dungeons and Dragons" with him.

Coleman invited his mother to the StoryCorps Atlanta booth to find out how a young black daughter of Kentucky sharecroppers developed her devout love of the genre.

As Nutter told her son, it all started with "The Lord of the Rings."
