The center of Irma may not hit Atlanta, but a tropical storm warning remains in effect. That means high winds and heavy rain - the kind of thing that can cause flash flooding and bring down trees and power lines.

Hundreds of thousands of Georgia Power and EMC customers are out of electricity in central, south and coastal Georgia, and Atlanta area residents should expect the same thing.

On "Morning Edition," Denis O'Hayer spoke with Brian Lynn, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Peachtree City.

An Atlanta airport official says there have been around 800 cancellations due to the threat of Irma, which weakened to a tropical storm Monday morning.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport spokesman Andrew Gobeil says the airport will still be operational Monday and will monitor storm conditions.

Gobeil says the airport created an overflow parking plan to allow planes unable to land in areas such as Florida to park at the airport in Atlanta.

Georgia students have begun carrying guns on college campuses as allowed under the state's new law.

There is some consensus among supporters and critics about one aspect of Georgia's new campus carry law, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Both sides say the provision that allows licensed weapon owners to carry guns at tailgating, but not inside athletic venues, needs changes.

People who oppose the law want guns banned from tailgating.
