On Tuesday, the Georgia Public Service Commission voted to approve the schedule for a round of hearings on spending at Plant Vogtle. This is routine, every six months the utility presents its costs to the regulators.

The officer who fatally shot a Georgia Tech student had been with the campus police department for about 16 months, according to state records.

Officer Tyler Beck shot and killed Scout Schultz, 21, Saturday night after the fourth-year student called 911 to report an armed and possibly intoxicated suspicious person, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

Beck is on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Georgia Tech said on its website.

A notorious 86-year-old jewel thief is out of jail but still faces legal trouble.

Drew Findling, a lawyer for Doris Payne, said that Payne was released Friday from the DeKalb County jail, just outside Atlanta.

Payne was arrested July 17 and charged with misdemeanor shoplifting after a Walmart employee said she tried to leave the Chamblee store with items she hadn't paid for.
