The Bard himself must be very pleased that Richard Garner is directing the Alliance Theatre’s production of “Shakespeare in Love.” The show is part of the theater's nomadic season while their stages at the Woodruff Art Center undergo renovation.
Garner co-founded the theater company Georgia Shakespeare in 1985 and this production lands him and his players in that company's old home at the Conant Performing Arts Center at Oglethorpe University. Garner says that the Alliance approached him to take part before their season had even been selected.
"[Alliance artistic director Susan Booth] said 'Richard, I just found out we've got the rights for 'Shakespeare in Love' and the Conant theatre is available, are you in?'" Garner tells "City Lights" host Lois Reitzes. "I said 'Are you kidding me? Yes!' So it's an artistic homecoming in many ways."
"Shakespeare in Love" runs Aug. 30 to Sept. 24.
