Divina Mims-Puckett with the metro Atlanta chapter of the Red Cross says volunteers are being trained to work in shelters.

“To date, the Red Cross in Georgia has deployed 52 workers to Texas and Louisiana, and we are gearing up, as a matter of fact today, to send more folks,” Mims-Puckett said.

She said the Red Cross is working fast to get background checks completed and additional volunteers trained.

Meanwhile, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's distribution center in southeast Atlanta is busy. Spokesperson Mary Hudak said FEMA is sending trucks packed with supplies to the region.

"They have shipped out 165 tractor-trailer loads of supplies to support the people and the shelter operations in Texas,” Hudak said.

Those tractor-trailers carried over a million meal kits, over a million bottles of water, 2,500 cots, 5,000 blankets, 500 generators and nearly 100,000 tarps to cover roofs that may be leaking.

Hudak said the Atlanta warehouse will continue to send provisions until a system is set up to get vendors to ship directly to the hurricane-impacted area.
