While taking a college playwriting class, Jeremiah Parker Hobbs wanted to find a creative approach that went beyond a traditional stage production.
After several years of working out the plot and fleshing out the tunes for a folk-rock musical, the Actor’s Express headliner last year showed what he had to singer and Atlanta actress Jessica De Maria.
A couple days later, as he explained on “City Lights,” she had half of it marked up and was bursting with her own ideas in the margins.
The musical forged from that collaboration, “The Last Time We Were Here,” has been chosen for the New York Musical Theatre Festival, and will be staged July 25 and 27.
The festival, which began in 2004, spotlights emerging musical theater works and artists.
Hobbs got backing and raised awareness for the musical through a Kickstarter campaign, raising $10,000.
In “The Last Time We Were Here,” Hobbs and De Maria star as Jacob and Grace, a young couple working their way through a strained relationship. The production includes love letters and poetry as well as plenty of music.
Hobbs and De Maria performed a few selections during their studio interview with “City Lights” host Lois Reitzes.
