The DeKalb Board of Commissioners voted 7-0 Tuesday to pay KPMG $275,000 Tuesday for the audit.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that one in eight customers' bills have at least tripled since April 2015.

The audit will look for what's causing incorrect and inconsistent water bills and recommend fixes. May 15 is the scheduled completion date.

It's the first audit ordered by Chief Audit Executive John Greene since he was hired in August as the county's financial watchdog.

Officials have said malfunctioning digital meters, misread meters, computer errors and other problems have caused billing errors.
