In this installment of Valerie Jackson in Conversation, Mrs. Jackson has two conversations featuring two of America’s Jazz greats, Freddy Cole and Wynton Marsalis.

We speak to pianist and singer Freddy Cole about sustaining a career that spans 50 years of jazz recording and performing, as well as what it was like to be born into a jazz family with Nat King Cole as a brother while making his own name in the music business.

Then, Mrs. Jackson sits down with the man who is now called the international ambassador of jazz, Wynton Marsalis. He is considered the first jazz artist to perform and compose across the full spectrum of jazz, from its New Orleans’ roots, to bebop, to modern jazz. Marsalis is multifaceted in his talents, from Classical and Jazz trumpeter, to composer, to author, artistic director of Jazz at the Lincoln Center.  Mrs. Jackson spoke with Mr. Marsalis about the health of jazz as an American institution, being raised in a New Orleans jazz family and the work he does with young, aspiring musicians as well as his performance with the JALC Orchestra on July 25th for the National Black Arts Festival.
