The Hyland’s products are the target of two recent FDA warnings, and were recalled once before back in 2010. The FDA has received reports of deaths, seizures and unresponsive episodes in children who’ve taken these teething pain relievers. Ultimately, the agency performed testing that showed inconsistent levels of a toxin called belladonna in the drugs. Remarkably, Hyland’s refused to recall its drugs, so they remain on the market, meaning Vox was able to purchase them from Groupon.

Belladonna is a toxin, and you might wonder why anyone would put a toxin in any drug, whether for a baby or anyone else. These are homeopathic drugs, which are based on theories that are over 200 years old and aren’t supported by modern science.
