The Alpharetta-based Southern Baptist Disaster Relief is sending a tractor trailer filled water and plastic roof tarps to Oklahoma to help provide immediate relief for tornado victims.

Mike Ebert is a spokesman for the relief organization.

“We hope that physical service and meeting those physical needs combined with the spiritual help and encouragement will be something to help people pick up and move on with their lives.”

Ebert also says the organization is sending a mobile command center and is working with officials in Oklahoma to see what the local needs are. He says in the future, volunteers from throughout Georgia are prepared to help.

Meanwhile, Governor Nathan Deal says the Georgia Emergency Management Agency has offered to provide help to hard hit areas if needed.

“We are waiting to see what they will ask us for. There is a possibility we are told they may need help in the area restoration of hospital type facilities, and if we are able to do that we will do what we can in that regard.”

The Atlanta Chapter of the American Red Cross is sending at least one local volunteer and hundreds of others are prepared to assist if called on.

Local relief agencies are also asking for financial assistance from area residents to assist those affected by the storm.
