A successful endowment campaign for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is fulfilling a promise two years early: to increase the number of musicians.

In 2014 contract negotiations, management at the Woodruff Arts Center promised the players to restore their complement to 88 by 2018.

An endowment campaign to raise the needed $25 million beat the deadline, and ASO says hiring is now underway. The Delta Air Lines Foundation contributed 10 percent of the needed amount.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra begins its 2016-2017 season this week, starting off with John Adams, Jean Sibelius and Sergei Rachmaninov.

This is the first of several John Adams pieces the Symphony will perform, as a tribute to his 70th birthday and many years of collaboration between the composer and the orchestra.

The musicians of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) lead professional lives well beyond the stage of Symphony Hall. They teach, compose, mentor, volunteer, perform ... and much more. Now, the ASO's principal harpist, Elisabeth Remy Johnson, has released her latest recording. It's called "A Christmas Collection" and it's an album of carols and holiday songs arranged for solo harp.

There’s a lot going on around Atlanta this weekend ... including Music Midtown at Piedmont Park and JapanFest at the Gwinnett Center.

To learn more, host Amy Kiley spoke with Betsy Riley of Atlanta magazine.  They began by talking about "Family Guy" creator and operatic baritone Seth MacFarlane singing show tunes with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.

George Takei was in town last weekend.  He became famous for his role on Star Trek as Mr. Sulu - helmsman of the USS Enterprise. He was here to narrate 'SciFi-Spectacular,' a series of concerts with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
