Atlanta Swedes Celebrate Saint Lucia Day With Song

Once a year in some countries, a bearded man shimmies down a chimney to deliver presents to good children and coal to naughty ones.

This incarnation of Saint Nicholas is by no means the only holiday tradition loosely based on Catholic saints.

In Sweden, for example, Saint Lucia and her band of maidens bring light, song and warm saffron buns and gingerbread to townspeople.

Radio, particularly classic American radio drama, is known as the "theater of the mind." The Atlanta Radio Theatre Company takes that classic format to contemporary audiences year-round with their podcasts and regular live performances.

An annual Atlanta tradition will take place a little earlier than usual this year.

The annual lighting of Macy's Great Tree at Lenox Square is scheduled for Nov. 22, the Sunday before Thanksgiving. For the past 68 years, the Christmas ceremony took place on Thanksgiving night.

According to a press release from Macy's, Atlantans "will be able to kick off their holiday festivities early."

Singer Jordin Sparks will headline the event, which starts at 6 p.m. A fireworks show will take place after the tree lighting.
