Atlanta power outages

More than 170,000 homes and businesses in the 10-county metro Atlanta area were still without power Wednesday afternoon, according to Georgia Power and Georgia EMC outage maps.

Thousands of crew members have been working to restore power for Georgians across the state after Tropical Storm Irma.

At the height of the storm Monday, more than 1.4 million homes and businesses in Georgia were without power.

"We have damage from one end of the state to the other – from Tybee to Trenton up in northwest Georgia – so it is very widespread damage," said John Kraft, a spokesperson with Georgia Power.

People across metro Atlanta worked to get back on their feet Tuesday after Tropical Storm Irma left many neighborhoods with downed trees and power lines.

But every storm has a silver lining. For Medlock Park resident Stephen Perras, that silver lining was seeing people come together in his Decatur neighborhood to help one another.

Perras is part of a Medlock Park neighborhood group nicknamed the “Medlock chainsaw gang” that began a couple years ago.

Today Tropical Storm Irma is headed toward metro Atlanta, and it will be grazing through parts of Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee during Tuesday and part of Wednesday.

Many metro Atlanta public schools have closed for Monday and have announced closing on Tuesday.
