Christmas

The holiday season has been unusually warm the past two years. Supplies of Christmas trees were still coming in the day before Thanksgiving here at Big John's Christmas Trees in Buckhead. Big John's owner expected the holiday weekend to be a big one

It was a warm Christmas along most of the East Coast on Sunday, including in metro Atlanta, where it was the second warmest on record.

Last Christmas, metro Atlanta saw a record high temperature of 75 degrees, just a one degree difference from this year's high of 74.

That's the second highest since 1878, when temperature records started to be collected.

Sidney King, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, said for the second year in a row winds from the Gulf of Mexico brought moist air to the Southeast.

The holiday season is in full swing. The family is over from all around the country, and Uncle Bob is still sulking over that heated political argument from Thanksgiving dinner. The teenagers are taking up the entire couch on their phones, and hosts are wondering who gave little cousin Timmy that super noisy toy Star Wars ship.

It’s time for a break – and WABE is standing by, ready to rescue families with 10 things to do in Atlanta this holiday season.

StoryCorps Atlanta

Brothers Paul and Hank Barnes – 87 and 95 years old respectively – grew up on a 1,000-acre farm in Warm Springs, Georgia that has been in their family since 1832.

Paul's grandson, Clifford, brought the brothers to the StoryCorps Atlanta booth to learn more about the workings of the family farm and what Christmas was like for them in this bygone era.

This story was recorded in partnership with the Atlanta History Center, which hosts Atlanta's StoryCorps Booth.

Forecasters say this Christmas could be the warmest ever recorded for several other Georgia cities.

The National Weather Service said the high temperature in Atlanta on Christmas Eve is expected to be 74. That would break the record for Dec. 24, which is 72 degrees set in 1984. The weather service projects a high of 74 on Christmas Day, as well, which would also break the old record of 72 degrees for Dec. 25.

In Macon, the weather service projects a high temperature of around 79 degrees on Christmas Eve, which would break the record for the date of 77 degrees set in 1964.
