February is African-American History Month, and Atlanta has been the site of a number of important events in that history. From the political and social legacy of the local civil rights movement, to the institutional history of the Atlanta's historically black colleges and universities, to the innovations of the city's music and art scenes, Atlanta has become known over the decades as an unofficial "capital of black America."

The city of Atlanta's population has been growing, but not as quickly as some other cities in the country.

Atlanta added 7,735 people between July 2014 to July 2015 – a growth rate of 1.7 percent, according to new figures from the U.S. Census Bureau released this week.

The data showed that Charlotte grew at a rate of about 2.2 percent with 17,695 people, for example, and Seattle grew at a rate of 2.3 percent.

The capital of the Peach State is among the fastest-growing metro areas in the nation.

Between 2013 and 2015 the population of metro Atlanta grew by more than 255,000 people, according to the Brookings Institution, which studied data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

This goes along with the Atlanta Regional Commission's (ARC) prediction that says the area will gain about 2.5 million people between now and 2040.
