The week before Labor Day is usually a vacation time for politics — but not this year.  

At Georgia's state Capitol, a big and diverse crowd gathered for the unveiling of a statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  The same week, a social media post appeared, in which a white Republican state lawmaker appeared to threaten a former Democratic lawmaker, who is African-American, with possible physical harm if she were to speak about removing Confederate monuments in South Georgia.

The future of the nuclear expansion at Plant Vogtle has been up in the air since Westinghouse, the lead construction contractor, went bankrupt earlier this year. A similar project in South Carolina was scrapped this summer after utilities decided it didn’t make economic sense to continue with it.

Toshiba has guaranteed more than $3 billion related to construction costs at Georgia Power’s Plant Vogtle. The future of the nuclear expansion at the power plant, which is near Augusta, has been – and still is – up in the air since the Toshiba subsidiary Westinghouse declared bankruptcy earlier this year.

About an hour before the agreement was due to expire Friday, Georgia Power issued an 11 p.m. statement saying it had been extended.
